Damage To Roof Shingles Caused By High Wind

What Type Of Damage
Can Occur?

Damage caused by high wind, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and microburst can include wind blown off shingles, uplift of individual tabs or shingles, shingle loss, broken sealant bonds, granule loss, and punctures caused by flying debris. Don’t assume your roof is undamaged until you’ve had a roof inspection.

How Can I Tell if The Roof Was Damaged?

Extreme roof damage from a wind event may be apparent, however, small amounts of damage
can harm the surface of the shingle and lead to premature deterioration of the shingles months or years later.

Specific Roof Damage From High Wind To Be Aware Of

Granule Loss

High wind exposure can result in varying degrees of granule loss. They can loosen
the granules, potentially allowing the granules to separate from the asphalt coating and wash off of the
roof. The extent of granule loss resulting from wind exposure is influenced by:

  • Age of the roofing shingle
  • Force and duration of the winds and rain
  • Wind borne debris
  • Orientation and slope of the roof deck in relation to the wind direction

Broken Sealant Bonds

High winds  can break the roof shingle sealant bond which seals the shingles together. When shingle sealant bonds are broken, it is very unlikely that the shingles will re-seal without hand sealing the shingle. The effective strength of re-sealing the wind damaged shingle is influenced by:

  • Age of the product
  • Time of year and amount of exposure to higher temperatures
  • Length of time before shingles are re-exposed to high winds
  • Stress  on the shingles due to exposure to high winds and roof deck movement
  •  Contamination of the shingle sealant by dirt, debris, or other wind driven and foreign substances
  • Ability for shingles to lay flat

Is Wind Damage Covered Under My Roof Warranty

Refer to your applicable roof warranty for complete
coverage and restrictions. However, shingle blow offs caused by winds in excess of the wind speed coverage, and other types of shingle failure (either immediate or the result of latent damage), are usually beyond the scope of most manufacturers shingle warranty

Damage from hail, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, fire, lightning, etc. is usually excluded from most shingle warranties. These catastrophic conditions and the flying debris that may accompany storms, may cause latent damage to the roof shingles and therefore cause the shingles  and roofing system to deteriorate prematurely.
