In this blog post, we take a moment to remember and reflect on the storm, its significant hail, and locally severe winds. Join us as we delve into the details, share storm reports, and explore how we can help homeowners recover and restore their properties.

The Storm

On that fateful day, severe thunderstorms tracked east-northeast through northern Illinois, unleashing their fury upon the region. Widespread large hail and locally damaging winds wreaked havoc, leaving homeowners with property damage and a sense of vulnerability. One of the hardest-hit areas was the corridor stretching from the Quad Cities through the southwest and north Chicago suburbs. Numerous instances of golf ball-sized hail or larger were reported, with the largest hailstone measuring an astonishing 3 inches in diameter—slightly larger than a baseball—in Oswego. This hailstone stands as the largest reported within the NWS Chicago County Warning Area since April 7, 2020.

The storm’s impact was not limited to hail alone. Locally severe winds swept through various regions, including Lee County in north central Illinois and central Cook County, exacerbating the damage. As the storm moved on, isolated storms redeveloped in the evening, accompanied by damaging non-thunderstorm winds measuring over 60 mph. Locations such as Mendota in LaSalle County and Round Lake Beach in Lake County, Illinois, experienced the brunt of these powerful winds. Additionally, the following day saw yet another round of strong to severe thunderstorms, resulting in sporadic wind damage as they traversed northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

During the severe weather event on April 4, 2023, MRMS Reflectivity at the Lowest Level (RALA) between 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM CDT captured the intensity and extent of the storms that swept through northern Illinois. The MRMS Reflectivity data provides valuable insights into the storm’s characteristics, such as the precipitation intensity and the presence of severe weather indicators.
